For some, domain redirection can be considered as a black-hat SEO practice while the others have found the paths to utilizing it in a white hat way.
For me, commonly it is not an issue at all and everyone is ok to apply domain redirection towards the main site.
The main reason why I believe so is because many popular sites are keep on redirect the domain names to their main websites even for Google itself.
As a free blog platform, you have known that Blogger built by Google can be accessed through blogger.com. What you may not realizing is that when you go to blogspot.com, it will redirected to blogger.com automatically.
So does when you are typing gogle.com into your browser, it will forwarding you to Google.com.
MOZ itself as a SEO tool is also applying the same. When you go to seomoz.com, you will find out that the domain has been redirected to moz.com.
When the old domains along with all URLs will be permanently redirected to a new domain and URL, from SEO's point of view it is also mean that all the backlinks will also benefits the new registered site.
However, if you try to redirect around 5 or 10 domains to the new one, your site may still be fine.
But, the more domains to redirect, take 100 expired domains as an example since they will likely cost you for only hundreds of dollar, that point you can start worrying since the more risks your site will be penalized by search engines for manipulating the rank.
Apart from SEO, redirecting domains is also required for brand protection and re-branding purpose.
Take an Indonesian e-commerce's domain as an example which is Tokopedia.id that is automatically being redirected to Tokopedia.com.
.id is the country code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) for Indonesia.
For such a big technology company specializing in e-commerce, managing both or even more type of domains can be considered as a must for not confusing the users to visit the main site that are using search engines as well as for the brand protection to prevent the frauds in digital environment on behalf of the company name.
So does when the company has a plan to expand the business internationally and needs to be re-brands it.
If a site is built with ccTLD (id, co.uk, etc) previously and decided to use the popular domain extension that people in the world are familiar with (com), then redirecting the ccTLD to TLD will be really helpful.
So basically, at least for mid-to-big scale of company website is recommended to buy 2 domain names which are the ccTLD that representing the original country a business is found and a popular domain extension like .com.
